When it comes to romance, I always think I need to go all in. Over-deliver if you want to look at it that way, but if your idea of romance involves ocean air, quiet streets, fireplaces, and no one rushing you out of a restaurant for the next reservation, Maine might be the place you want to visit.

I put together a list of 3 coastal towns that don’t do flashy but are perfect for a romantic trip.

Let’s put it this way: they do what I would call “real” romance. The kind that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. Whether you live in New England or just think you’ve seen it all, these three Maine coastal towns deserve a spot on your short list.

Kennebunkport, Maine: Classic Coastal Romance That Never Tries Too Hard

If romance were a postcard, it would look like Kennebunkport. The town is polished without feeling pretentious. There are historic homes, cozy inns, quiet beaches, and just enough open shops and restaurants in winter to make it feel intimate instead of sleepy.

If you want simple, take a walk along Ocean Avenue, grab dinner by candlelight, then find a fireplace and let the night end early in the best way possible.

Why do I love it? There's timeless charm, walkability, and an “old souls welcome” vibe that makes slowing down feel natural.

Camden, Maine: Mountain Views, Harbor Lights, and Snow-Globe Energy

Camden is what happens when the ocean and the mountains decide to flirt, or this is what I’ve heard, anyway.

You will find a postcard harbor filled with boats. Spend the day wandering the village, grab coffee with a view of the harbor, and end the night somewhere warm with a window seat and a bottle of wine. It’s quiet, romantic, and unintentional, in a good way.

Why do I love it? Camden is coastal with mountain scenery and a downtown that feels tailor-made for wandering around with someone you love.

Ogunquit, Maine: Understated, Artsy, and Secretly Romantic

Let’s start with the correct pronunciation of Ogunquit. uh-GUN-kwit (rhymes with “a gun quit”). Ogunquit is often overlooked in winter, and that’s exactly why it works so well.

With fewer crowds, the Marginal Way feels almost private, the ocean sounds louder, and the whole town leans into a low-key, creative energy. Galleries, coastal walks, and cozy restaurants make it ideal for couples who want romance without a schedule.

Why do I love it? There are oceanfront walks, artistic charm, and a “just us” feeling you don’t have to try for.

Maine doesn’t do romance loudly. It does it honestly. Fireplaces over fireworks. Quiet towns over crowded cities. And sometimes, the most romantic thing you can do is go somewhere that lets you disappear together for a couple of days.

What do you think? Where do you think is the most romantic place to go?
