Saxophone Santa Serenades People All Over New England
Santa has a secret all year, but on November 1, he lets it rip with a big ole saxophone serenade.
Of course we're talking about the Saxophone Santa, a very popular holiday classic in his own right, playing for crowds and shoppers all over Southern New England.
Kevin McMahon taught himself how to play the sax over 30 years ago, and quickly figured out the joy it brings people. He loves Christmas too, so he donned a Santa outfit years ago, and decided to be Santa's helper to spread cheer.
This marks his 39th year and according to Local21News.com, he sometimes plays for six or seven hours a day. He says, "It's not a job, it's fun", and he'll play something special if people make requests.
McMahon says the most requested song he gets is "Jingle Bells", and that's one every knows and can sing along to.
People know and look forward to the Saxophone Santa every year. McMahon says,
It's always fun, especially seeing the children's faces and people walking by. It absolutely gives me a sense of purpose. My purpose is to brighten up the holiday season despite a lot of things going on in the world. I like to bring peace and joy to the listeners.
This Santa with a saxophone is a busy guy, playing throughout Connecticut and Rhode Island during the holiday season. He doesn't do it for the money, but for the pure joy it gives those who stop or do a double take seeing Santa playing a sax.
That's the spirit of the Christmas. Play on, Saxophone Santa, play on.
