Normally, when we think about the "best" beaches in Maine, we fixate on the bigger, well known, beaches.  Old Orchard Beach, Popham Beach, even Acadia's Sand Beach.

It probably never crossed your mind that one of the best beaches in the state, in all of New England for that matter, was located nowhere near the ocean.  Right?

According to Fodors, one of the best beaches in the country, Echo Lake Beach, is located inside Acadia National Park.

When we say inside Acadia National Park, we really mean it.  The beach is on a freshwater lake in the interior of Mount Desert Island.  Like something out of a movie (or the latest season of Fortnite), the pristine lake is surrounded by mountains, hills, and forest.

You can find the beach along Route 102, but you can also get there by hopping about the free Island Explorer shuttle during the summer season.

Acadia Magic describes the beach as being:

on the southern shore and is staffed by a lifeguard from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The beach has become the most popular freshwater swimming site on the island for locals and visitors in-the-know. The water is much warmer than the ocean water temperature at Sand Beach in the park. This is a good beach for kids and families as it is relatively shallow for quite a distance.

Next time you make the trip to Acadia National Park, remember that the park has a lot more to offer than Sand Beach, Cadillac Mountain, and Thunder Hole.
