Two of America’s Best East Coast Beach Towns Are Right Here in Maine
Maine's coastline is rather impressive.
In fact, it's one of the longest in the nation. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, it measures 3,478 miles when you include every jagged edge, nook, and cranny. That means the state has quite a few gorgeous cities, towns, and villages to enjoy.
Among them are two towns that were recently featured in an article about some of the best on the entire East Coast.
What are the Best Beach towns on America's East Coast?
The popular site Wonderlust Travel compiled a list of 15 of the best beach towns to visit on America's East Coast. This list is an absolute all-star lineup of iconic towns that are perfect for a day of fun and excitement.
Maine's two representatives on the list are indeed heavy hitters, perhaps the heaviest you’ll find in the state: Bar Harbor and Kennebunkport.
Bar Harbor is a picturesque coastal town located in the southern part of Downeast Maine. Known for encompassing much of Acadia National Park, it also serves as a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from near and far.
Acadia National Park draws millions of visitors each year, and as a result, Bar Harbor sees its fair share of attention, particularly during peak tourist months. It’s truly a match made in heaven.
Visitors can explore a charming town filled with top-notch restaurants, ranging from casual seafood shacks to upscale dining options. Bar Harbor also boasts an array of unique shops showcasing local artists, a thriving craft beer scene, and an unbeatable natural setting that enhances the town's appeal.
Here's what Wonderlust Travel had to say about why Bar Harbor was included on the list:
This small town on Mount Desert Island is a gateway to Acadia National Park. Hike Cadillac Mountain at sunrise, stroll the quaint downtown, or enjoy a lobster roll with a waterfront view.

The other representative lies a bit further down the coast.
Located in coastal York County, Kennebunkport is an absolute gem of a town. It's perhaps best known for its charming downtown area, Dock Square—a coastal hub filled with local shops, galleries, restaurants, and beautiful places to stay. It’s also a great spot for a leisurely stroll and a chance to soak in the region’s coastal beauty.
Visitors should also consider taking a short drive to explore the area's historic and picturesque homes, including, of course, the very famous Bush family compound.
A postcard-perfect town where time slows down. White clapboard houses line the streets, and boutique shops invite you in. Walk along Goose Rocks Beach or grab a cup of clam chowder at a local cafe. It’s a slice of New England at its finest.
These are two heavy hitters and excellent choices by Wonderlust Travel. Maine has other locations that were likely considered, but there’s no denying that these two towns showcase the best of Coastal Maine’s charm.
New England is One of the Best Regions on the East Coast for Beach Towns
Maine isn't the only New England state to get some love on this charming beach town list. Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island each have one representative included. They are:
Newburyport, MA
Newport, RI
Mystic, CT
All three are worthy towns and can hold their own against any beach town on the East Coast. Personally, Newport might be my favorite town to visit in America, so I’m glad to see it included.
