Maine Has 9 of America’s Most Popular Grocery Store Chains

Back when I was growing up in the last century, Maine’s grocery store scene was dominated by two heavyweights: Hannaford and Shaw’s. The two chains had a near-stranglehold on the market, while smaller competitors were left fighting over whatever business remained.

But times have changed, and shoppers now have far more options to choose from.

The Maine market scene has been completely transformed with the likes of major national retailers Aldi, Whole Foods Market and Trader Joes. And even the monster regional chain Market Basket continues to grow its footprint in the state, which includes another location opening soon in Scarborough.

Let's face it, people can get very territorial about where they shop. That favoritism leads to fanatical debates and arguments about what is truly the best chain.

These fierce rivalries are probably what led Stacker to put together a list of the most popular supermarket chains in the country. Here is a little of how Stacker came up with the results.

Ten of the 40 most popular grocery chains can be found here in the Pine Tree State, including five in the top 10. Those five include Shaw’s parent company, Albertsons, which sits at number 10. The convenience store chain Circle K is ranked eighth. Whole Foods comes in fifth, Aldi is third, and Trader Joe’s is second.
