Maine Has the Slowest Internet in New England—and It’s Not Even Close
I wish I could say I wasn't addicted to the internet, but that would be one heck of a lie.
But let’s be honest, Al Gore’s invention is one of the greatest pieces of technology in modern society. Where else can I watch a video about how to fix my sink, check game scores, find recipes, and get cyberbullied by 13-year-olds? It’s literally unmatched.
I absolutely love the internet, and I’m also a very impatient person—which means I abhor when internet speeds are downright horrendous.
We Mainers know this all too well. It’s bad enough that huge areas of the state are cell phone dead zones, but to also have subpar internet? That’s just a monumental slap in the face.
The internet has always seemed slower here than in other parts of the country, and now we have proof that all of our complaining is 100% legit.
The tech site HighSpeedInternet.com (appropriately named) decided to break down every state’s internet speed to determine which ones are lagging behind (that’s a nerdy internet pun). The site looked at each state’s download speed to determine the best of the bunch.
I don’t think anyone will be shocked to hear that Maine has one of the lowest internet speeds in this study. In fact, it ranked as the slowest state in New England—and the 34th slowest in the nation. That is, well… terrible.
How Slow is Maine's Internet Speed?
According to HighSpeedInternet.com, Maine’s average download speed is 165.59 megabits per second. Megabits per second (Mbps) is the unit used to measure internet bandwidth and data transfer speed—and what it’s measuring here is Maine’s ridiculously low speed.
Seriously, that’s an awful number. The internet is kind of a big deal these days. There’s hardly a job that isn’t affected by it in some way. Students of all ages rely on it. It’s our main source of entertainment, news, weather updates, and staying connected with family and friends. And yet, here we are—living in one of the slowest states in the country. It’s just downright embarrassing.
What New England State has the Fastest Internet Speed?
So how bad is Maine compared to the rest of New England? Let’s take a look at the other states and see where they rank:
4. New Hampshire - 213.04
8. Connecticut - 201.50
9. Massachusetts - 199.69
10. Rhode Island - 198.18
18. Vermont - 181.99
Every single New England state is leaving Maine in the stone age. Maybe we should do something about this before we start resembling a third-world country.
As for the fastest state? That would be West Virginia. The Mountain State is bringing it with some serious speed, clocking in at a solid 216.96 Mbps.

Unsurprisingly, Hawaii brought up the rear with an abysmal 90.9 Mbps. It’s a good thing they have nice beaches. And honestly, who needs the internet if you live in paradise?
