Maine is the Only New England State This Bank Robber Hasn’t Hit, and Here’s Why He Probably Won’t
New England banks keep getting robbed
This honestly sounds like something straight out of a Criminal Minds/NCIS/Law & Order storyline (or a show like it), or even a movie from the Ocean's Eleven franchise -- but for the last five months, various banks all over New England have been getting hit by the same robber.
According to CBS 13, from around September 9, 2021 through the last robbery that occurred last month on January 27, 11 different banks spread out between Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont have been hit by someone considered to be armed and dangerous.
The Route 91 Bandit
Much like in the above-mentioned crime shows, authorities have come up with a cutesy name for the criminal -- the Route 91 Bandit. Sure, the name sounds about 30 years old (probably because of The Wet Bandits from Home Alone -- who uses the word "bandit" anymore?), but the crimes are very current for the Connecticut cities of Enfield, Windsor, Somers, Avon, and East Windsor; the Massachusetts cities of West Springfield, Athol, Montague, and Greenfield; Brattleboro, Vermont and Keene, New Hampshire.
The name from the FBI comes from the fact that, as reported by CBS 13, every single one of those towns falls along the Interstate 91 corridor.
Maine should be safe from the Route 91 Bandit
As shown in the map above, where the red line running north to south indicates Interstate 91, the highway runs nowhere near the Great State of Maine. Which means unless he completely changes his M.O. now that he's been dubbed The Route 91 Bandit and maybe starts hitting banks along state highways that run from east to west and then transitions back over to an Interstate like 95, there's no real need to sound the alarm (no pun intended) at Maine banks.
That's not to say to not be prepared, though, because as shown below, this guy is a bit unpredictable -- like being the most nonchalant, relaxed bank robber ever?
The FBI is offering a $10,000 payday to help catch this guy
According to the FBI, citizens should be on the lookout for someone who is between 5'6 and 5'8 with blue eyes, light-colored hair, usually wears a hoodie or a hat, and a pair of white sneakers that definitely look like they come from the "Dad section" of the store. He also drives a newer model Nissan sedan.
The FBI provided a few pictures of the robber as well as his car on their website as well. A $10,000 reward is being provided by the FBI for information that leads to his ID, arrest, and conviction. All dad sneaker jokes aside, though, the FBI is saying to consider the Route 91 Bandit armed and dangerous, so stay safe.
