Maine Native Mackenzie Holmes Returns to WNBA, After Breakout Season Abroad
A familiar face to Mainers is heading back to the WNBA.
Following a tremendously successful season down under, former Gorham High School standout Mackenzie Holmes is back stateside with the WNBA’s Seattle Storm for another stint with the squad.
Holmes saw action in 10 games with the Storm in 2025 after missing the entire 2024 season due to knee surgery. The Maine native was actually waived by the Storm to begin the 2025 season but was brought back in June—and clearly made an impression.
Where did Mackenzie Holmes Play During the Offseason?
This past winter, Holmes spent the offseason playing professionally in Australia, where she absolutely tore it up. Playing for the Geelong Venom, Holmes led the team in scoring (21.87 per game), rebounding (9.61), and blocks (1.09), and was named to thee All-WNBL First Team. Now she’s ready to take the WNBA by storm (no pun intended) once again.
Holmes was an absolute star at Gorham High School, leading the Rams to numerous championships while breaking records left and right. She would finish her high school career as Gorham's all-time leader in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots. Her high school career would be capped off by winning Maine Gatorade Player of the Year.
She went on to play collegiately at Indiana, where she faced elite competition. Holmes had a dynamic five-year career that included a plethora of awards. Here are just a few:
- First Team All-American
- Second Team All-American
- Third Team All-American
- Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year
- 3x Big Ten First Team
- Big Ten All-Freshman Team
