One of Maine's most iconic natural resources is receiving some well-deserved national recognition.

The team over at Cheapism set out to identify the most beautiful river in every state. That's not exactly an easy task in a place like Maine, where scenic waterways seem to be around every bend.

What is the Most Beautiful River in Maine?

After sorting through the competition, they landed on a choice that's hard to argue with: the mighty Penobscot River. Rich in history, natural beauty, and cultural significance, the Penobscot stood above the rest to earn the title of Maine's most beautiful river.

Ranging from eastern Maine to the northern and northwestern reaches of the state, the Penobscot is one of the longest rivers in the Pine Tree State. The main stem stretches an impressive 109 miles. However, when you factor in its extensive East and West branches, the Penobscot River system extends nearly 280 miles.

While the Penobscot may be best known for flowing through Bangor and eventually emptying into Penobscot Bay, its branches are renowned for their seclusion and their connection to the breathtaking wilderness of Baxter State Park.

What Makes the Penobscot River so Special?

The Penobscot is a dream destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The river offers everything from challenging whitewater rapids and incredible canoeing opportunities to excellent fishing. Of course, it's also celebrated for its remarkable beauty, particularly in areas surrounding Penobscot Bay, Baxter State Park, and the remote forests of northwestern Maine.

Here's part of the reason Cheapism selected the Penobscot as Maine's most beautiful river:

It's the largest river entirely in Maine, the second-largest river in New England, and home to the largest remaining Atlantic salmon run. The river traverses pristine forests, tumbling through rapids suitable for everyone from beginning paddlers to whitewater experts. Anglers can catch not just salmon, but wild brook trout, small-mouth bass, and striped bass.

Well, that sums it up quite nicely.
