Portland’s Tandem Bakery Earns Praise for Maine’s Best Breakfast Sandwich
Calling Portland, Maine, an up-and-coming foodie town is absolutely selling it short.
The city is packed with incredible restaurants serving up creative dishes and cuisines from around the world. Whatever you’re craving, chances are you can find a delicious version of it somewhere in Portland...and probably more than one.
This includes the almighty breakfast sandwich, a staple in practically every city in America. If your city’s breakfast sandwich game isn’t up to par, then you definitely can’t call it a true foodie town.
Fortunately, Portland is killing it in this department, with plenty of great spots that could make a case for the top spot. However, according to a recent article from a popular culinary site, one iconic Portland bakery reigns supreme.
The folks over at Chowhound decided to put together a list of the best breakfast sandwich in every state, and their choice for Maine is an absolute home run.
Where Can You Find Maine's Best Breakfast Sandwich?
We’re heading straight to Tandem Coffee Roasters in Portland to chow down on one of its incredible baked egg sandwiches, served on those famous homemade biscuits.

Tandem has been a local and tourist favorite ever since it was opened by Will and Kathleen Pratt in 2012. It’s best known for two things: freshly roasted coffee and, of course, some of the best biscuits in America (the New York Times even said so). The fluffy, sweet clouds of goodness are pure joy. Biting into one for the first time might belong on the Mount Rushmore of lifetime experiences. Yes, they are that good, especially with a little butter and jam, or better yet, as a breakfast sandwich.
What Makes Tandem Bakery's Breakfast Sandwich So Good?
The sandwich is a colossus, yet surprisingly simple. It features a perfectly baked egg, melty American cheese, and a delicious pimento mayo, all tucked inside one of Tandem’s famous fluffy buttermilk biscuits. It’s the kind of breakfast you won’t soon forget.

So, what makes this sandwich so special? Here’s what Chowhound had to say about Maine’s pick
Reviewers comment on everything from the freshness of the biscuit to the way the egg and cheese just melds together and the smokiness of the pimento sauce — and you can also add sausage. Just be sure to get there early because the sandwiches often sell out.
The only downside to these delicious bad boys is that the word has been out about them for a long time, so a significant queue is typically waiting for you when you get there. However, it’s well worth any wait you may have to endure.
