I don't have to tell you how cold and long a Maine winter can be.

The seemingly never-ending days of cold commutes and heating bills can really take it out of you. That's why we Mainers need to have hobbies in the winter.

Staying Active in Maine During the Winter

Maybe that's an outdoor activity, like skiing or snowshoeing. Or maybe it's extra hours at the gym to keep up with the summer bod. Or you can be like me and do the exact opposite of keeping up with the summer bod. Yes, eating and drinking is definitely a hobby. In fact, it might be the best winter hobby, especially here.

It's also a great time to go out because the establishments could use a nice influx of business. It's a very difficult time for all of us, but especially for an industry that relies on people coming through the door.

Winter Wednesday: Supporting Small Maine Businesses

This new program encourages folks to get out the door and hit up a participating restaurant, bar, or cafe so they can take advantage of great deals.

It's a simple concept, really. Each area eatery is encouraged to promote a special or deal every Wednesday throughout the winter months. Then, every participating establishment is listed on the Winter Wednesday website so folks can go and see their options.

At the time of writing this, over 50 eateries statewide are officially participating. That's quite a solid start for an upstart program like this.

It also encourages people not to live like hermits during the long winter, which is very easy to do if you're not careful.

Winter Wednesday runs until March 26, so expect to see more local establishments jump on board and start offering some good deals for the people. You can check out their website now to see the participating joints and the deals they have set up for Wednesdays. I must say, there are some great ones that I will certainly be taking advantage of.
