I think we were all curious what the first month of recreational cannabis sales in Maine would look like. And sure enough, Mainers opened up their wallets and shelled out nearly a million and a half dollars in the last 30 days. Or, if you roughly divide that up, around the state, Mainers were spending 50 grand a day on the devil's lettuce.

I'm not surpirsed. Folks around the state waited four years to be able to go into a dedicated store and purchase legal cannabis. Of course, we've had the very broadstroke medical program in Maine for several years. It started to resemble the jokes about California, as getting your "weed card" in Maine has never been difficult.

That's not to say there aren't hordes of folks in Maine who need medicinal cannabis, but when the list of conditions comes with an "other" category, that leaves some roof for vast interpretation of what's medically necessary. Most folks kind of thought of it as pre-paying for the cost of violation for possession, hahahaha.

And if you were wondering what Mainers were buying at all these new retail locations... According to WABI - TV5, Over three quarters of the product sold was "flower". In other words, the actual buds of the plant. The rest was made up in concentrates and edibles. Proving Mainers would prefer to shove that expensive weed in a pipe and set it on fire.

However, there's a lot of chit-chat on the street that the prices for recreational are a bit out of control, bordering on gouging. So if something isn't done about stabilizing the price, people will fall out of love with the stores and go back to the black market. The same thing happened in Colorado at first until the state stepped in.

Don't get me wrong, I think if alcohol is legal, so should cannabis. Regardless of whether one chooses to use it or not, the choice should be there for people. Not to mention, stop clogging up our courts with dumb possession cases. There's a lot of good to be had here. Let's just see if it's as much monetary good as everyone claimed.
