Mainers Respond to Bowdoin College Requiring COVID-19 Vaccinations This Fall
A couple of days ago, WGME CBS 13 News reported that Bowdoin College in Brunswick has become the first (and so far, only in Maine) college to actually require both students and staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID in order to participate in-person for the upcoming fall semester.
Reps from Bowdoin told WGME that the requirement is "in order to protect the health and safety of our community, particularly people at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19." With the timeline Bowdoin has set, all students will need to be fully vaccinated by Friday, August 13, while all faculty and staff have a deadline of Tuesday, August 24, which is the first day students return to campus.
To the shock of absolutely no one, Mainers (and even those from away) have a lot to say about this new requirement from Bowdoin. The story made its way around Reddit over the weekend and needless to say, with over 250 comments, people had a lot to say. Some of the highlights:
"This isn't unprecedented. Kids have already had to be vaccinated to go to school (citing requirements from Maine.gov). I would guess 99.9% of people complaining about this won't be going to Bowdoin anyway, so what's the issue?" - Reddit user sukaasuka
"I mean they've already stopped distribution on two of the four vaccines because they were killing people, and there is no legal recourse, and there is no information known about the long term effects, and it's the first time this entire class of vaccine has been used on humans, so you don't know if it's safe and neither does anyone else." - Reddit user JoshuaRideout
"Good. Lump all the COVID vaccinations in with the list of vaccines people already need to have in order to attend school. If all you anti-vaxxers here get COVID then don't come crying on my shoulder. And don't invite me to your inevitable funerals either." - Reddit user geico_fire
How do you feel about Bowdoin requiring students, faculty, and staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID to start the Fall 2021 semester?
