Maine’s Friendly Skies: A Look at the State’s Busiest Commercial Airline Routes
Air travel can be rough. The long security lines, crowded food courts, non-existent parking, never-ending terminals, and general public can drive any sane person mad.
However, we Mainers are relatively lucky. Our two largest commercial airports are a godsend. Easy in, easy out. There's nothing like parking and getting to the gate in the span of 10 minutes. It's a completely different flying experience, and small market flying at its finest.
But just because Maine is small doesn't mean there's isn't a wealth of airlines and route options to choose from. Both Portland and Bangor's airports fly to numerous major hubs, and even feature a handful of direct flights to popular destinations.
With more and more options being added, it's making it less likely to choose an out-of-state airport like Boston-Logan or Manchester. Even the price differences are much more competitive than they used to be. And when you factor in gas and parking fees, staying in Maine to fly out continues to get more attractive.
With this in mind, it got me wondering where Mainers are going to the most. Now, thanks to the Department of Transportation, we have our answer.
Below is a list of the 15 busiest commercial routes from Maine airports. They include every major airline, including a few budget ones. All the major east coast hubs can be found, plus some busy spots in the Midwest, and even one location in Florida.
It's a fun list for any aviation geek like me, or those wondering where to fly next.
Would you have guessed what number one is?
