Former Maine gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler was charged with several counts of possession of child pornography and arrested at his home Friday afternoon.

Cutler, 75, was arrested around 4 p.m. at his residence on Naskeag Point Road in Brooklin, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss. He was charged with four counts of possession of sexually explicit material of a minor under 12 years of age.

Cutler was taken to the Hancock County jail and is being held on $50,000 bail.

NewsCenter Maine reported the arrests came after searches of both his homes in Portland and Brooklin. Moss told NewsCenter Maine the searches were the culmination of a two-month investigation but did not disclose any details.

Cutler ran for governor in 2010 and 2014 as an independent. He also served as associate director for Natural Resources, Energy and Science in the Office of Management and Budget in the Carter administration. He was also the principal White House official for energy.

He is married with two children.
