Mainers from around the state were reporting a brief, bright light in the sky in the early Sunday morning hours. Aliens? Nope. It was Falcon 9. A SpaceX rocket that left Cape Canaveral, Florida at 6:01 am according to Space.com

Check out the launch below. Liftoff is at 14:40:

SpaceX was founded by Elon Musk, who is also the founder of Tesla. Their mission according to the SpaceX website and in the words of Elon Musk himself,

You want to wake up in the morning and think the future is going to be great - and that’s what being a spacefaring civilization is all about. It’s about believing in the future and thinking that the future will be better than the past. And I can’t think of anything more exciting than going out there and being among the stars.

The Falcon 9 rocket is noted as "the world's first orbital-class reusable rocket" which cuts down costs for future endeavors.

Thanks to a beautifully clear night it was visible from here in Maine. One local photographer, Eric Storm happened to be at Popham Beach and was able to capture Falcon 9 before it disappeared.
