According to News Center Maine a new bill is being introduced by Maine Republican Senator Matt Pouliot that would hold owners accountable when their dog attacks someone.

Recently, a citizen was attacked by two dogs in a parking lot. Even though the woman was obviously hurt, the owner loaded his dogs into his vehicle and drove away without seeking medical attention for the person that his dogs injured and without taking accountability in any way. Not so much as an, "Are you all right?"

The legislature's Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee unanimously passed an amended version of the bill:

  • Dog owners must get help if their dog has caused an injury that requires medical attention.
  • Dog owners must give bite victims contact information.
  • Failure to take these steps would result in Class D criminal charges.
