Most of us have been affected by the devastation of a cancer diagnosis, whether it’s ourselves, a relative, or loved one.

According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 1 of 3 people will have cancer during their lifetimes.

Ruth Santosuosso of Plaistow knows that all too well.

Santosuosso is fighting stage 4 breast cancer, according to WMUR, and when the Plaistow Fire Department found out about the diagnosis they decided to do what they could to spread a little Christmas cheer.

Firefighters gathered together decorations and lights and decked out Santosuosso’s house.

Santosuosso’s daughter Danielle Decastro told the news station that with her mother’s diagnosis, decorating the house this year was not an option. Decastro said that her mom’s smile after seeing the decorations is something she will cherish and showed her the kindness others can show in tough times.

Captain Scott Vezina of the Plaistow Fire Dept. told WMUR that they were willing to do anything they could to spread a little cheer.

Although they did not seek out thanks, Decastro said she can’t thank the Plaistow Fire Department enough for what they did.
