Now Maine Student Athletes Are Taking a Knee. What Do You Think?
Taking a knee in protest of racial inequality in our country was started by Colin Kaepernick, a former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. School sports have begun, and according to WGME some Maine students are adapting the gesture during the Star Spangled banner. Nine Traip Academy girls soccer team members took a knee on Monday night and it has led to some of the girls being cyber bullied because of the silent protest. According to Bangor Daily News, University of Maine soccer coach Scott Atherley defends freedom of speech but believes that, "there are alternative but equally impactful platforms for self expression."
The topic has definitely created a lot of discussion. Do you have any suggestions for an alternative way for players to raise awareness to racial inequality that doesn't involve using our national anthem and possibly offending some of our veterans?
