Smartasset.com ranks Portland as the sixth top worktirement city in the U.S. this year. What is this new word "worktirement"? Well, seniors these days are staying in the workforce longer and for different reasons. Some need the money to supplement their retirement savings and some just need to keep busy and have a place to be. This is Smart Assets Third Annual Worktirement Study and they took factors such as: median housing costs, tax rates, medical centers, retirement housing, and unemployment rates into consideration.

Here are the top ten:

  1. Boca Raton, Fl
  2. Billings, MT
  3. Rapid City, SD
  4. Edmond, OK
  5. Tyler, TX
  6. Portland, Maine
  7. Wilmington, DE
  8. Scottsdale, AZ
  9. Salem, OR
  10. Livonia, MI and Troy, MI (Tie)

According to Smart Asset, Portland is a great worktirement spot because it's easy for seniors to stay active and jobs are available. The only drawback is that earnings for residents 65 and older are below the national average. Portland is a terrific place to work if you just want to stay busy, but not if you need the money. Maine was the only New England state to make the top ten.
