New Market in Portland, Maine Puts Local Food Front and Center
Maine's Tallest Building Has a New Tenant, and It's a Tasty One
Standing tall at 201 Federal Street is The Casco, an 18-story building that officially opened in 2023. The Casco is primarily residential, filled with apartments. However, like many new builds in Portland, the lower floors are reserved for commercial leases.
While the residential units filled up quickly, the commercial spaces took a bit longer—which isn’t unusual, to say the least. But that’s changed with the highly anticipated opening of Milly’s Market.
Milly's Market is Portland's Highly Anticipated New Grocer
This brand-new market is poised to be a perfect fit for Portland. It features locally made products, fresh produce, pre-made meals, beer and wine, and plenty of other tasty goodies.
I must say, considering I work nearby, it’s exciting to see a new lunch option opening up. You can never have too many choices—especially one that uses a lot of great ingredients to offer such a variety of delicious meals.
How did Milly's Market Get its Name?
According to Portland Food Map, this isn’t the first store for Milly’s owner, Matt Manson. He also runs Blackie’s Farm Fresh Produce up in Auburn, where you’ll find many of the same locally sourced items from Maine farms and producers. PFM also notes that the name “Milly’s” is a combination of his two children’s names—Madison and Billy. And now I’m annoyed my parents never named anything after me and my brother.
Milly's Market's hours are 8a - 7p Tuesday through Thursday, 8a - 9p Friday and Saturday, and 9a - 5p on Sunday. It's currently not open on Mondays.
Best of luck to Manson and his family on this exciting new venture. Hopefully, the Portland community sees the tremendous value in having another local grocer that supports Maine’s small businesses and farms.
Honestly, every community could use more of this.
