Single in New England? Portland, Maine, Is Calling Your Name
When Beyoncé sang “All the single ladies,” her next line should have been “should live in Portland, Maine.”
Why? Because a new report claims Maine’s largest city is quite a hit for those living the single lifestyle.
Portland, Maine, is One of the best Cities for Singles in the Northeast
WalletHub, a personal finance website, recently published its annual report on the best cities in America for singles, and wouldn’t you know it, Portland came in as the best city in all of New England for the category. WalletHub’s report included America’s 150 largest cities, plus at least two of the largest cities in each state.
Portland finished with an overall ranking of 38th, putting it just ahead of its Northern New England cousin, Burlington, Vermont.
The rankings are based on the average of three categories: Economics, Fun & Recreation, and Dating Opportunities. They were further broken down into 35 subcategories to get the most accurate data possible.
Portland was not solid in every category. In fact, the city truly struggled in Economics, finishing with a ranking of 138th. I don’t think I need to explain why this is so low — you know, with how expensive literally everything is.
However, the city bounced back in the other two categories, finishing 47th in Dating Opportunities and 32nd in Fun & Recreation. Listen, things might be expensive here, but at least there’s a lot of fun and a lot of options, am I right?
Honestly, I can certainly attest to how great the singles scene is here, because I once lived it — and even met my future wife in a bar in this fine city. So, I think Portland is the perfect city to be single, have a lot of fun, and eventually settle down.
Portland wasn’t the only city in Maine listed. Lewiston was also included in the report. However, the city on the Androscoggin struggled in the rankings, finishing 148th overall. Well, there’s always room for improvement.
What is the Best City in America for Singles?
The best city for singles, according to WalletHub’s report, is Atlanta, Georgia. I can imagine the excitement of living in a city with decent weather, great food, and a whole heck of a lot of entertainment.
As for the worst, that went to Brownsville, Texas. I mean, the Mexican border is nearby. I feel like that could be some fun.
