The job market in Maine remains exceptionally strong, particularly in its largest city, as highlighted by a new employment opportunity report showcasing the abundance of opportunities available in the region.

Portland Ranks 5th for Job Opportunities in New National Report

Wallethub.com, a personal finance website, recently published its latest list of best cities in America to find a new job.

Portland is ranked as the 5th best city to find a job. This is tremendous news for the city, considering 182 cities were included in the study.

Portland earned a technical score of 64.29 on a 100-point scale, with the scoring based on two key categories: Sob Market and Socioeconomics. These categories were further divided into 31 detailed subcategories to provide a comprehensive analysis. For more information on the methodology, click here.

Portland secured an impressive 5th place overall in the job market category, which includes subcategories such as job opportunities, job security, job satisfaction, and access to benefits. This strong ranking highlights the abundance of quality job opportunities available in the city.

Portland also performed well in the socio-economic category, earning a ranking of 15th. This category included subcategories such as median household income, commute time, and safety. Given Maine's consistent ranking as one of the best places to live in the U.S., it's no surprise that Portland excels in this area.

While these rankings are superb, it also illustrates the struggle that business owners have had in Portland to fill positions. Just about every block in town has "Help Wanted" signs littered across store and office fronts. It truly is an employee market.

Maine Cities Shine in Latest Employment Opportunity Rankings

Portland isn't the only city in Maine featured in the study—Lewiston also made the list, securing a strong ranking of 35th. This is a positive sign for the Androscoggin County city, which continues to undergo revitalization and growth.

South Burlington Tops New England in Job Market, Portland Follows Strongly in 5th

The highest-ranked New England city in the report is South Burlington, Vermont, which finished just ahead of Portland in 4th place. Both South Burlington and Portland were the only New England cities to make it into the Top 15.

The lowest-ranked New England city in the report was Bridgeport, Connecticut, which, unsurprisingly, finished with a ranking of 160, nearly at the bottom. You can view the full list here.
