With the heavy tourist season winding down, I decided to check out TripAdvisor’s Maine page to see what outsiders think about something that seems to have taken over the city: the hotel industry.
I’ll never forget hearing, back in the early 2010s, that many people thought Portland was close to being oversaturated with hotels. Boy, was that theory off.
How Much has Portland's Hotel Scene Changed in the 2000s?
A lot has changed in Portland over the past two decades, but nothing compares to the massive growth of the hotel industry. I still remember when the Regency and the Holiday Inn by the Bay were basically the only options in town. Boy, have times changed.
The Old Port, East End, and West End are now dotted with beautiful, trendy inns that have completely reshaped the city’s dynamic and skyline.

While some of these hotels stand alone, others have been integrated into older buildings, helping to preserve Portland’s history and character.
With the city’s hotel scene completely transformed, I was curious to see which inns people love most. So I looked at TripAdvisor’s latest “best of” list, which ranks hotels based on several factors, including popularity and guest reviews.
