Portland, Maine’s Beloved Pub The King’s Head to Expand with New Location in Freeport
Portland is a foodie’s paradise, and it's no secret how fortunate we are to have such a vibrant culinary scene.
With practically endless choices for mouthwatering dishes, inventive craft drinks, and exceptional coffee, the city is a true haven for food lovers.
While it can be quite a Sophie's Choice decision, I can tell you one place that is always a major hit and one that I would probably classify as "underrated." The place I'm referring to is the excellent pub, The King's Head.
The King's Head: One of Portland's Finest
Located right by the water in the Old Port, The King's Head is a gastropub that specializes in a fantastic locally sourced menu, an amazing beer selection, and delicious cocktails.
While all of that is certainly enough, the King's Head truly takes it to the next level with its incredible ambiance and decor. Exposed wood and brick combine perfectly to create a comfortable space that practically invites you to enjoy a game or socialize with friends. You truly feel like you've stepped into a British pub when visiting The King's Head.
Originally opened in 2014, The King's Head has steadily built a solid following for many of the reasons already mentioned. Another big factor is its outstanding brunch and late-night dining options. Portland is a brunch town, and since the pandemic, there aren't many decent late-night food choices. Well, The King's Head has you covered for both.
As great as it is to highlight one of my favorite spots, the real reason for this article is to announce the very exciting news that The King's Head will be opening a second location soon.
The King's Head is Opening a Second Location
According to the fine food purveyors over at Portland Food Map, The King's Head plans to open in the former Jameson Tavern location in Freeport. The historic tavern sadly closed in late 2024, having been a fixture in the community for nearly 250 years.
However, I can't think of a better tenant to take over this legendary space. The King's Head will be the ideal concept, especially for a location with so much wonderful history and character.
The King's Head Plans to Open Freeport Location This Spring
According to Portland Food Map, renovations have already begun, and they are hoping for an early spring opening. Let's hope that timeline holds true, because I can't wait to visit!

Expect more details to come out regarding this venture. I wonder how much it will resemble their outstanding Portland location. I'm sure there will be some similarities, but I expect it to have its own identity.
Congrats to the owners of The King's Head on this most welcome news. I look forward to following the progress of the new venture as we get closer to opening day.
