Eight cruise ships will bring 12,000 passengers to downtown Portland this week with more on the way, according to WMTW.com.

The Portland television news station reported Tuesday the city will see a total of 74 cruises ships between now and November, which represents a 15 percent increase over last year. The cruise ship industry also represents big business for Maine's tourism industry. WMTW.com reported that Maine saw $45 million in direct cruise ship spending in 2012.
