Rare Hawk From Peru Spotted in Deering Oaks in Portland
This Great Black Hawk native to Peru, not the Maine town, was seen Thursday hanging out in the trees at Deering Oaks Park. Lauren Sawyer of Laruen Sawyer Photography captured this beautiful photograph of the hawk which is far from home.
Just how far from home? As the crow flies, or in this case the Great Black Hawk, Deering Oaks is 3792 miles away from Peru.
The Maine Audubon identified the bird which appears to be young, as the adults are typically all black.
So the question now is how did this bird used to warmer climates end up here in Maine during the absolute worst time to visit?
