There's an All Star Cal Ripken Baseball Tourney happening in Barrington NH for the 8 year old age bracket and my nephew Colin played a prominent role in one of their wins this weekend. Let the bragging commence!

Rochester had enough willing ballplayers to field TWO All Star teams this year and as fate had it, both of them faced off on Saturday morning.

It was quite a slugfest. Even with the five run rule, (a terrific rule to prevent games from being played for 12 hours at a time) the score going into the last inning was 14-7 in favor of my nephew's team.

There are also rules to prevent kids from pitching until their arms fall off. The maximum amount of innings that a kid can pitch in a game is 2. So, wouldn't you know it, Colin had to pitch the last two innings.

The excuses I can use here are plentiful, he had only pitched a couple of times in the regular season, the mound in Barrington is far steeper and smaller than he is used to, the pressure of having the entire city of Rochester focused on his every pitch must have been excruciating.

But alas, he persisted, kept throwing the ball over the plate and Roger Allen (his team) hung on to win it 14-9.

While batting, Colin went 1-2 with a walk and a run scored.

To be honest, the thing that made me the most proud was when he was called out and he clearly made it to first base TWO STEPS before the ball got there, and he just calmly ran to the dugout with no dramatics or tears shed. That just doesn't happen anymore, even in the pros!

They beat Dover yesterday 6-5 and are on to the Finals tomorrow!
