Security Camera Video Appears To Show Bobcat In Augusta, Maine

Even though the forests of Central Maine are filled with all kinds of critters, we really don't see many truly wild animals in our towns and cities.  Sure, you'll see the occasional raccoon, squirrel, skunk, or other small rodent wandering around our towns, but you rarely ever see BIG wildlife in our downtowns or residential neighborhoods.

Sightings of these bigger animals are rare, but they do happen.

On Saturday morning, a poster on the Augusta Maine Neighborhood Watch Facebook group claimed to have spotted a bobcat wandering through her neighborhood on a security camera.

The poster, a woman named Theresa, reportedly lives on Cushnoc Drive, on the East Side of Augusta.  The sighting reportedly happened at about 1:30 on Saturday (April 8th) morning.

According to Wikipedia, the Bobcat, or Lynx Rufus, is a medium sized cat that lives throughout North America.  While they are very small at birth, an adult Bobcat is somewhere between 18.7 and 49.2 inches in length and they stand at 12 to 24 inches in height at the shoulders.  When fully grown, they can weigh 10 or more pounds.

According to the State of Maine website, bobcats are not often seen in the northwestern part of the state due to the extremely snowy winters.  However, they are known to inhabit all other parts of the state.  And, while they typical spend most of their time in the deep woods, they have (recently) been spotted more frequently in towns and smaller cities.
