Should Remote School Days Replace Snow Days For Maine Students? [POLL]
According to WGME, some Maine students will be taking part in a pilot program that will eliminate school snow days and replace them with "remote school days".
A lot of adults work from home, it makes sense that our students can do the same when the weather makes traveling to school unsafe. Working remotely would mean less impact on the school calendar.
Participating students are from Five Town CSD which serves kids from Camden, Rockport, Lincolnville, Hope and Appleton.
The pilot program will start off using two remote school days. Here's how they work:
- Parents and students will be notified of remote days through the district's call system.
- 7th through 12th graders will use their school issued laptops to get their work done.
- The school district will provide a device that creates a wireless hotspot to students without internet service.
- Students who do not complete their work on remote days will be considered absent.
- "Blizzard Bags" containing a skill-based project that is due when kids return to school will be handed out to kids in kindergarten through sixth grade.
- Teachers will be available through email to help out students from 10a to 4p on remote school days.
- If widespread power outages are predicted, a remote day will not be called.
