Ski Racing While Being Pulled by a Horse? It’s Going Down in Topsham, Maine

Skijoring

Today I learned a new word that for once wasn't an Urban Dictionary word and that word was "Skijoring".

Skijoring is a Norwegian word that means ski driving and skijoring is coming to the Topsham Fairgrounds. Think water skiing only it's on land and you're holding onto/being pulled a horse instead of a boat.

This event was recently announced by the Topsham Fair and it sounds like a really fun and unique event to witness.

It's a sport that many in this part of the country don't know of but is a popular winter sport in other areas.

Horse Illustrated explains that skijoring can be done canine or equestrian style, either a horse pulling a skier or dogs. There are obstacles such as gates and jumps to contend with as well.

Basically, it's a race around the track with the horse leading the way with a rider on its back and a skier or the skijorer holding onto a line attached to the saddle horn.

There are two divisions happening in Topsham novice and pro and two age brackets; junior for those ages 10 to 17 years old and adult for those over the age of 18. Cash prizes will go to the winners. For full registration information and rules and regulations click here.

Watching The SkiJoring Races

The event is at the Topsham State Fair located at 32 Community Way on February 12th. Gates for spectators open at 9:30 am and the races begin at 10 am. It's only $5 per person and $15 max for a family. There will be a bonfire, food trucks, and a beer tent.
