Portland, Maine, is fortunate to have one of the greats mascots of all time.

The Portland Sea Dog’s mascot Slugger goes above and beyond every single game to bring the community joy, laughter, and positivity through his skits, dances, and costumes.

I may even be bold enough to say that some people (me) go to the Sea Dogs games just for Slugger and not even baseball.

Portland Sea Dog’s Mascot, Slugger

He is more than just a sea dog and more than just a mascot.

Slugger is a vital part of our community, making appearances at events, parades, you name it. I may have a crush on this mascot but I’m not even biased; the entire country actually agrees with me because Slugger may very well be hitting a triple win for the Mascot Hall of Fame Awards this year.

As of November 12, Slugger the Sea Dog was sitting at the No. 1 spot in three of the Mascot Hall of Fame Awards categories: Minor League Best Video Short; Minor League Greatest Community Impact; and Minor League Best In-Game Routine or Skit.

If you’ve been to a game, then you know why he may be winning all three of these categories. If you haven’t had the pleasure, then check out his 2022 highlight reel:

Like… Are you kidding me?!

The Iron Man costume is next level; his skill at back flips, splits, ballet dances, and hip thrusts are out of this world, and the dirty dancing moment was top tier.

Mascot Auditions

I also have a soft spot for this because I personally auditioned to be a mascot at my college. I attended the University of Miami and I auditioned to be our mascot, Sebastian the Ibis and did not make the cut.

I guess you have to know about sports to be a mascot for a top-rated sports college…weird!

It was a three-hour audition and was the worst experience of my life. I cried my entire walk home to my dorm room. The costume was 500 degrees Fahrenheit minimum, the moves I had to do were outrageous, and the sports test was dehumanizing.

Slugger, my guy, I have a LOT of respect for you.
