Farewell To The Hamburger Stand: Iconic Biddeford, Maine, Restaurant Closes Its Doors
Difficult times continue for Maine's restaurant industry, with many outstanding establishments having recently called it quits.
Unfortunately, that list continues to grow with the recent announcement that a beloved Biddeford spot is closing its doors.
The Hamburger Stand in Biddeford Is Closing its Doors
And so ends the nearly decade-long run of one of the most unique and delicious establishments in Biddeford. It's never easy to see small businesses close, especially when they've been a focal point in the community, like the Hamburger Stand.
It was nine years ago that The Hamburger Stand first opened on the corner of Elm and Saint Mary's Streets. Suddenly, an old service station had transformed into a hip-looking food joint serving up tasty breakfast and lunch classics. Breakfast sandwiches, waffles, burgers, hot dogs, fries, fried seafood, and homemade sweets could all be found—and devoured—at the Stand.
The food, fun ambiance, and friendly service were all major factors in The Hamburger Stand's success, especially before the pandemic hit in 2020. It also helped that the joint had a devoted fanbase and plenty of regulars who absolutely swore by its delicious food.
Numerous Factors Contributed to The Hamburger Stand Closing Down
The owners cited several reasons for the Stand’s closure, including rising costs, increased rent, and vendor pricing. These are all issues we’ve heard from many other restaurants that have struggled—or have closed down entirely.
One has to wonder if the massive construction projects currently underway in downtown Biddeford are also playing a role. Sadly, this may be the first small business to close its doors due to the six-month improvement project. It's going to be tough for some of these stores to get the usual foot traffic they're accustomed to. Hopefully, most people won’t be too deterred from continuing to visit their favorite establishments.

Best of luck to The Hamburger Stand family. It’s always tough to see a business close, but I truly commend them on a great run—and for the incredible positive vibes they’re continuing to share with everyone, even as they say goodbye.
I hope they find much success in the future—they certainly deserve it.
