The Wealthiest City in Maine Right Now
What does it mean to be wealthy? The definition changes for some, but most of us believe it's all about the number in our bank accounts.
For most people in Maine, being wealthy in monetary terms isn't an option. Maine remains amongst the poorest states in the country, and that is unlikely to change in the coming years.
With that in mind, most of Maine's cities are considered middle class based on the median income of its residents. So when it comes to declaring which is Maine's wealthiest city, you may be surprised at the answer.
No, it's not Portland. Despite astronomical living costs, Portland is not considered Maine's wealthiest city. Instead, it's a city not far north of Portland with a history of really gorgeous homes and an annual agricultural fair.
According to Travel A Lot, Maine's wealthiest city is Cumberland. Specifically, Cumberland Foreside. Cumberland Foreside is the coastal area of the city of Cumberland, and its average median household income is rather eye-popping.
The average median household income throughout Maine is around $58,000. For Cumberland Foreside, you can essentially multiply that number by three. The average media household income in Maine's wealthiest city is a little over $157,000 per year.
It doesn't have a direct affect on the median household income, but Cumberland is known for having one of southern Maine's largest agricultural fairs every year. Cumberland also boasts one of the state's consistently highly-rated high schools, Greely.
While Cumberland takes the top spot as Maine's wealthiest city, several of its neighbors like Falmouth, Yarmouth, and Portland aren't far behind.
