Maine is a pretty safe place compared to other parts of the country,  but there are definitely parts of Maine that are more dangerous than others.

RoadSnacks.net came up with a list of the 10 most dangerous cities and towns in Maine in 2017. They took data released every year by the FBI. The most recent data is from 2016 with 2017 data to be released by the end of this year.

The criteria for the list takes into consideration, violent crimes per capita and property crimes per capita and applied that to any town with a population of over 5000 people. That leaves 55 towns and cities on the list and these are the top 10 most dangerous based on that data.

  1. Augusta
  2. Skowhegan
  3. Biddeford
  4. Bangor
  5. Waterville
  6. Sanford
  7. Presque Isle
  8. Portland
  9. Auburn
  10. Houlton

You may be surprised at the results and wonder why some places that have a notorious history of crime aren't on the list. Lewiston might be one that comes to mind, but the city has turned things around in recent years and is now ranked 16 on the list. Augusta has some work to do.
