I played Janie's Got a Gun by Aerosmith yesterday and once again wondered what kind of an instrument was used to make that scary, shrill, echoing sound in the beginning of the song? The percussive instrument is a metal plate with metal rods sticking out of it and it's called a Waterphone. Not only did Aerosmith use it on their 1989 album Pump, the Waterphone has been heard in countless horror movies adding to the building tension on the screen. I'm pretty sure this was the soundtrack to my nightmare at 4 am today too.

Watch if you dare.

And while we're here, let's watch the Janie's Got a Gun video.
