Tommy’s Coffee Break Calendar for February 26th
Something you might not know about Jimmy Page... -- A seventh consecutive No. 1 LP for...? -- A New Orleans legend birthday...
2/26/1965 (55 years ago today) - Over in Merry Olde England, before Led Zeppelin made him a force to be reckoned with, Jimmy Page released a single as a solo artist -- "She Just Satisfies" was produced by Jimmy, who also did the lead vocals and played all of the instruments except drums! Jimmy's girlfriend at the time was singer Jackie DeShannon who encouraged him to move his career beyond work as a much-in-demand session musician. Today, Jimmy refers to the song as a "bit of a curio, tongue-in-cheek, and it's better forgotten". See what you think...
2/26/1966 (54 years ago today) - There was quite a fuss at the time because no one of significant artistic stature had ever released an album without putting their name on the cover! Leave it to The Beatles with "Rubber Soul" becoming their seventh No. 1 album in a row on the Billboard chart -- It was a turning point, all right, as they came to realise that their future belonged in the studio making full-length albums, not on stage where they couldn't even hear themselves sing -- The Fab Four's trajectory is now officially unstoppable.
2/26/1928 - Born in New Orleans, Louisiana on this day, the truly remarkable Antoine "Fats" Domino, Jr. Did you know...?: that Fats had released five different million-selling singles before 1955(!) -- He hit The Top 40 no less than 35 times with classics like "Ain't That A Shame", "Blueberry Hill", "Whole Lotta Loving", "I Want To Walk You Home", "You Always Hurt The One You Love", and a fantastic rootsy-sounding cover of The Beatles' "Lady Madonna" (in 1968) -- A very warm and intensely congenial pioneer of rock's early boogie-woogie roots, Fats passed away back on Rocktober 24, 2017; he was 89 years old.
