3/18/1967 (53 years ago today) - The Beatles score their 13th U.S. No. 1 single with the double-A sided "Penny Lane" / "Strawberry Fields Forever". In England, though, it was the first Beatles single not to hit No. 1 since "Love Me Do"(!) -- Bizarrely, "PL/ SFF" only made it to No. 2 on the U.K. chart, blocked from the top by (and this is true) Englebert Humperdinck's "Release Me"...

3/18/1978 (42 years ago today) - It's the California Jam II Festival in Ontario, California, where more than 350,000 kick it out at the Ontario Motor Speedwayand the line-up is a near-perfect time capsule of 1978 air-guitar ridiculousness -- Appearing at this "sequel" to the 1974 Cal-Jam were Aerosmith - Foreigner - Heart - Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush - Dave Mason - Ted Nugent - Rubicon - Santana - and Bob Welch. Mmmm, wait.....Rubicon? They were a (sort of) funk/rock fusion band formed by Jerry Martini (a founding member of Sly & The Family Stone) also featuring future Night Ranger members Jack Blades on bass and Brad Gillis on guitars...

3/18/1991 (29 years ago today) - You want a sign of the times, go with this one: After attending a Virgin Megastore promo appearance in Dublin, U2 were found guilty of illegally selling condoms at the event! They were fined $850.
