9/22/1962 (58 years ago today) - They were the first British vocal group to make the U.S. Top 20: The Springfields (Dusty Springfield, her brother Tom, and long time musical friend Tim Field) went to No. 20 with "Silver Threads And Golden Needles" -- No other U.K. vocal act had ever gone that far up on the American charts before! -- The song has certainly made the rounds, having been performed and/or recorded live by many artists including Johnny Rivers, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Everly Brothers, Dolly Parton and The Cowsillsthe best known version probably belongs to Linda Ronstadt from her classic 1973 LP "Don't Cry Now".

9/22/1969 (51 years ago today) - You would think we could recall this one, but NOOOOO!A new weekly TV series called "The Music Scene" debuts on ABC, Monday evenings with a weird time slot: 7:30 to 8:15 pm(!?!?) -- Comedians David Steinberg and Lily Tomlin host on different episodes -- The first show featured James Brown, Three Dog Night, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young -- Despite the level of talent that appears on subsequent episodes (Sly & The Family Stone, Stevie Wonder and The Rolling Stones), the series tanks, getting cancelled mid-season due to poor ratings. Apparently, in 1969, neither audiences nor advertisers could "grasp the concept" of a television show that clocked in at 45 minutes...

9/22/1958 - Happy Birthday to the Godmother of Punk, an actual-certified-pioneer-kick-ass-take-no-prisoners-living-legend, the one and only Joan Jett, 62 years old today. If you really don't love her, may we politely suggest you check your pulse...
