9/27/1964 (52 years ago today) - The Beach Boys made their television debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show", where they really did spot-on live versions of "I Get Around" and "Wendy". It was a great performance, accompanied by screaming fans and a trio of hot rods! Of course...

9/27/1979 (37 years ago today) - Scottish guitarist Jimmy McCullough was only 26 years old when he died from a heroin overdose at his London apartment. Quite a talented musician with an impressive resume for such a young age; he started out with the critically acclaimed Stone The Crows and Thunderclap Newman before securing the lead guitar spot in Paul McCartney's Wings (that's Paul saying "Take me down, Jimmy!" just before McCullough's nifty guitar solo on "Junior's Farm"). When Thunderclap Newman's "Something In The Air" (produced by Pete Townshend) went to No. 1 in England in 1969, it made Jimmy the youngest guitarist to ever play on a U.K. chart-topping single -- he was just sixteen at the time!

9/27/2011 (5 years ago today) - Tony Bennett becomes the oldest living artist to top the U.S. album chart when his "Duets II" album goes to No. 1. Especially notable, not only because Tony was 85 years old at the time (and his recording partners included the likes of Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse [her last recording it turns out], John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Carrie Underwood and Aretha Franklin) but also because {somewhat shockingly} it was the first U.S. No. 1 album of Tony's 60 year career!!! The previous oldest performer to go to the top was the then-67-year-old Bob Dylan with 2009's "Together Through Life". Gotta say we genuinely love Tony Bennett though, one of the coolest cats on the planet...
