Two New Businesses Coming to Former Windham Pizza Hut Location
When Pizza Hut at the Windham Mall closed its doors at the end of 2019 after 25 years in business, speculation began on what might replace it. After over a year of sitting vacant, the old, iconic Pizza Hut building was torn down and construction has now begun on the site for two new businesses.
The area near the entrance to the Windham Mall has seen some major changes in the past few years. In May of 2019, the Windham Friendly's closed after the company filed for bankruptcy. Just seven months later, Pizza Hut suffered the same fate as the company downsized in a shift to more delivery service than dine in, and closed the Windham location on the other side of the mall entrance from the former Friendly's.
Portland Pie Company opened in the Friendly's building in June of 2020 and two new businesses will become neighbors on the former Pizza Hut site.
According to plans on the Town of Windham's website, a joint restaurant and coffee
shop with a drive-thru is being built. The information on the Windham website does not specify what restaurant and coffee shop will go in the space, but since Windham already has a Dunkin' and an Aroma Joe's, and based on the size of the building that will house both businesses, the logical conclusion is a Chipotle Mexican Restaurant and a Starbucks are the new tenants.
Unlike Pizza Hut, this 4000 square foot building will face Roosevelt trail and will have 28 parking spaces. The drive-thru entrance for the coffee shop will be to the right of the main entrance/exit and loop around the building headed back out the same way entered.
Construction is in the early stages and there's been no word yet on a completion date or public confirmation of Chipotle and Starbucks, so we'll just have to keep and eye on things as it begins to take shape.
