What Did Hallowell Police Retrieve From The Kennebec River On Tuesday?
Late on Tuesday morning, we started getting messages from listeners saying law enforcement in Hallowell were retrieving something from the Kennebec River. The listeners seemed to believe that law enforcement was in the process of pulling a "body" from the river. Fortunately, that was not the case.
Apparently, someone had spotted a 13 foot Old Town Predator kayak floating down the river. Law enforcement intercepted it and, inside, they found a backpack and duck decoys.
Hallowell PD posted about the find on Facebook and were able to locate the owner of the kayak. We're being told he is fine. Apparently, the owner had been duck hunting near Waterville last night. He lost the kayak when he went to retrieve a downed duck.
Overnight, the kayak floated downriver to Hallowell, where it was spotted and retrieved.
Clearly, this story should serve as a warning of how important it is to be careful when boating on the Kennebec River. This is especially true in the winter, when the temperature of the water is near freezing.
