A friend of mine and I were headed to the Maine Turnpike entrance in Kennebunk on our way to a pinball tournament when we came to a traffic light and neither of us could believe what we witnessed.

When we arrived at the intersection of Route 35 and 111 in Lyman, we saw that the traffic light was out. Nearby stores had power, so it seems something was wrong with the signal itself. It was completely dark in all directions. The below photo is where we were at the intersection, but from Google Maps, so the light is working here.

My friend and I watched in disbelief as car after car on Route 111, just ran right through the intersection at the posted speed limit of 45 miles per hour as if the malfunctioning traffic light wasn't even there. All it takes is one person to go zooming through who doesn't know the rules of the road for an uncontrolled intersection for all of them to follow like lemmings without any regard for the others trying to cross Route 111.

That's not you dear reader, I'm sure. You're smart. You know that when a traffic light is out due to a power outage or any other reason, you treat the intersection as a four-way stop. But people always need reminding like two years ago when a power outage took out the lights at an intersection in Westbrook and police had to explain what to do.

So remember, if you come to a traffic light with no lights lit, treat it like a four-way stop sign. If you need a refresher on how to do that, here's a link.
