There's a home for sale in Biddeford that was built in 1900 and is currently for sale for $1.6 million. It is 12,361 square feet, has three floors, garage space for four vehicles, and a staggering 12 bedrooms. It's listed with Regency Realty Group as a single-family home. That's a lot of bedrooms for a single-family home. What's going on here?

The home is located at 257 South Street in Biddeford and sits on four acres of land. It was built in 1900 as a single-family home, but served as a different type of home until just this past fall.

This home was called Shaw House Residential Care and was a home for the elderly who needed assistance in their daily lives. According to the Portland Press Herald, the owner of Shaw House had to close because of the effects of the Covid pandemic which caused, among other things, staffing shortages.

The house had been converted to serve the needs of the 20 residents there, with more dining areas, seating areas, bathrooms and of course, bedrooms. It would take some more work, but it could be converted back to a single-family home as it originally was 122 years ago.

But if anyone were to buy this home at the asking price of $1.6 million, they'd probably be able to afford to have the work done to bring it back to its original purpose. I mean 12 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms are pretty cool, but not really practical use of the space for a single-family home.

Take a look inside this gorgeous period home that still contains much of the look it had all those years ago.
