Winter Is Definitely Back. Mount Washington Looks Like the North Pole Now
Winter is Coming: The first sign is snowfall on Mount Washington
While most of us are taking in the spectacular fall foliage show mother nature blesses us with each year, those at the top of Mount Washington are enjoying a snowfall. Mynbc5.com is reporting that Mount Washington has had a bit more than 5 inches of snow overnight. In addition to the snow, the observatory is reporting hurricane-force winds of around 80-100 miles an hour. Mount Washington looks like the North Pole now with stunning snowfall and frigid temperatures.
Nimbus the Cat
I hope the new Mount Washington cat named Nimbus is safe by a fire indoors. It will be the official observatory cat’s first winter on the peak. It’s a winter wonderland situation at the summit. The scenery is beautiful, but I would love to watch it from the comfort of a soft, comfy chair, a fireplace with a warm fire, through a window. I doubt my Mini Cooper would do well atop the Mountain in those wind conditions
Don’t expect snow down the mountain anytime soon
While it seems unreasonable to us at lower elevations, the Observatory reports that this snowfall event is not unusual as the summit averages about 17.6 inches of snowfall every October. Pretty to look at but I wouldn’t want to drive in it. I love snow but I can’t imagine enjoying a walk-up at the observatory with those wind speeds. Meteorologist and weather observer Jay Broccolo tells mynbc5.com that “We’re starting to see snowdrifts build-up against the doors. And all the doors, you can hear the wind blowing through the doors. So, winter’s definitely back.”
