Tommy’s Coffee Break Calendar for August 26th
Today, you got your “Spiritual Regeneration Movement”; you got an amazing line-up for a 1970 U.K. Rock Festival; and you got the start of a trend that we now wish had never begun…
8/26/1967 - (47 years ago today) During a press conference in North Wales at University College, John, Paul, George and Ringo formally announce that they have become disciples of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. With the guru right by their side, The Beatles also say that they have renounced their “use of drugs” and become members of the Maharishi’s “Spiritual Regeneration Movement”. What does that mean? It means the boys are now obligated to donate one week’s earnings each month to the organization! An easy guess as to how it all turns out.
8/26/1970 – (44 years ago today) The third Isle of Wight Festival gets underway in England. Over the next three days, you can catch Jimi Hendrix (in what would turn out to be his last ever U.K. appearance), along with Jethro Tull, Donovan, The Doors, Miles Davis, The Moody Blues, Procol Harum, Sly & The Family Stone, The Who, Spirit, Cactus, Joni Mitchell, Free, Chicago, Joan Baez and Emerson, Lake & Palmer and you are correct, sir: they don’t make ’em like that anymore.
8/26/1987 – (27 years ago today) Oh, it’s true, alright; he once said that he never voted until he was 53: Sonny Bono announces he’s running for mayor of Palm Springs, California. Not only does he actually win the election a year later, Sonny even goes on to become a member of Congress in 1996! This is probably where the smug-’n-smarmy-’n-somewhat-ludicrous tradition of rock (and/or movie) stars becoming politicians begins. Safe to say it only gets uglier from this point on.
