1/27/1970 (47 years ago today) - If you want something done right...: John Lennon wrote, recorded and mixed his new single "Instant Karma!" in just one session(!); it arrived in record stores a quick ten days later. In a few years, the punk scene would try to take credit for this kind of D.I.Y. approach; naturally (as always), it was a Beatle who got there first...

1/27/1971 (46 years ago today) - You gotta know how to make an entrance...: David Bowie arrived in the U.S.A. for the very first time, but because of inexplicable work permit restrictions, he was unable to make live performances; instead, he got some publicity by wearing a dress to a promotional event! Naturally (as always), the artist formerly known as David Jones never did what was expected of him...

1/27/1951 - Happy Birthday to J. Geils Band keyboardist extraordinaire Seth Justman, 66 years old today -- Peter Wolf got the spotlight as front man, and J. had the name and guitar licks, but the fact is, the overall sound of those Geils records remain unimaginable without the keyboards of the bands youngest member -- Seth not only co-wrote their classics "Give It To Me", "Must Of Got Lost" and "Love Stinks", but six of the nine songs that made up the bands most successful LP, 1981's "Freeze-Frame", were written, arranged and produced by Seth himself(!), most notably the still-on-the-radio-every-day-classic "Centerfold", which was a No. 1 single for six weeks in a row. Great talent, really taken for granted...
