Tommy’s Coffee Break Calendar for July 14th
Today’s all about Concerts: an opening act, a break-up onstage, and a full-band debut!
7/14/1967 – (47 years ago today) Not as weird as Hendrix opening for The Monkees, but pretty close: The Who begin their first full North American Tour at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon. For 55 dates, they are the opening act for (–ahem!?!–) Herman’s Hermits!
7/14/1973 – (41 years ago today) Yeah, we think the audience figured it out: During a concert at the John Wayne Theatre in Hollywood, California, Phil Everly smashes his guitar to bits and storms off stage; brother Don finishes the set by himself, then announces that The Everly Brothers have split up. Just to be clear.
7/14/1977 - (37 years ago today) So, the headliner was…who, again? Elvis Costello and the Attractions make their live concert debut at The Garden, Penzance, Cornwall, England. They are the opening act for Wayne County! Oh, just look it up.
