11/15/1965 (53 years ago today) - The Rolling Stones made their U.S. television debut on the NBC-TV sort-of-musical-variety series "Hullabaloo", performing their current No. 1 single "Get Off Of My Cloud". The show was quite similar to the more-often-mentioned/more-affectionately-remembered "Shindig!" (on ABC), featuring a different host every week, and boasting the same fear of rock and roll: for every performance by a group like The Yardbirds, The Animals and The Stones, you also had to endure performances from the likes of Jack Jones, Liza Minnelli and Frankie Avalon. Nostalgia can bum you out sometimes...

11/15/1966 (52 years ago today) - The Doors sign a deal with Elektra Records to produce seven albums -- Somewhat reluctantly, they "agreed" to release "Break On Through" as the first single from the debut LP, and, as it always seemed to go with The Doors, controversy inevitably followed: in order to secure radio airplay, the song was issued in lame-o edited form -- Jim's singing "She gets high/She gets high/She gets high" is changed to "She gets.../She gets.../She gets...", as if leaving it blank was more artistic than inserting a 'beep' or using backward-masking, precisely why so many kids of the era grew up hating suits and ties, really...

11/15/1969 (49 years ago today) - Janis Joplin is arrested during a gig in the haven of tolerance Tampa, Florida -- Apparently upset at the way police were forcibly directing fans back to their seats, Janis decided to take the matter into her own hands (always a good idea...): in between songs, she calls one of the officers a "son of a bitch" and threatens to kick his face in! Predictably, it is then Janis who is forcibly directed...right off stage and charged with using "vulgar and indecent language". She is later released on $504 bail.
