15 Years After It Was Stolen, Thief Returns $800 to Maine Musician
For a lot of us, our 20's can be a time where we live a little rough. Often times, living arrangements consist of a roommate or several, and the responsibilities of life haven't quite taken over yet, especially in Maine. This is why a short little story shared on Facebook by musician Pete Kilpatrick hit home for so many of his friends and followers. It could have happened to them, and probably wouldn't have resulted in the twist ending.
As the story goes, Kilpatrick shared that he once lived in an apartment with several roommates that comprised another popular Maine band known as Jeremiah Freed. At that time in Kilpatrick's life, he was taking any gig he could find in hopes of saving up $10,000 to record and master his very first record. Through those gigs, he had saved around $800 and was hiding it in an old Maxwell House coffee can in his room. The story takes a twist when there is a party held at the apartment Kilpatrick was living in. The party wrapped up and when Kilpatrick went looking for his stash of cash, it was gone. He had a suspect back then, but never moved on the hunch.
Fast forward 15 years later, and Pete Kilpatrick has put a really excellent career in music together. But he randomly thought about the incident at the apartment, and the person he suspected stole his money. Through the power of social media, Kilpatrick looked the person up and decided to contact them asking them about in the incident. In a true twist that seems like fiction, the person wrote back within minutes. They admitted to Kilpatrick that they did steal the money and sent him the $800 to make amends.
Kilpatrick quipped that he was going to ask for interest on that sizable loan over the course of 15 years, but decided to quit while he was ahead.
